    Energy rehabilitation of buildings through phase change materials and ceramic ventilated façades

    In recent years, phase change materials (PCMs) have gained major relevance for their ability to take advantage of indoor/outdoor air temperature differences to store energy. This characteristic of PCMs allows to transfer stored energy to periods of energy demand, thus achieving optimum conditions of comfort and notable energy savings. The present study compared the energy consumption of a traditional façade and a ventilated façade to which large format ceramic tiles covered with PCMs were applied. For this purpose, an office building in the city of Alicante was used as a case study. Salt hydrate PCMs were attached to the slabs, and air was allowed to circulate or not circulate through night and day dampers as passive conditioning, accumulating energy. The energy performance of the building was simulated using the Lider-Calener (HULC) energy certification tool in both scenarios. The building’s energy demand was calculated in its current state and with the ventilated façade with ceramic tiles and PCMs. An energy saving of 5% was obtained

    El reciente desarrollo de la instrumentación diseñada para proporcionar datos de aceleraciones y movimientos del cajón número 8 del dique Botafoc (Ibiza), perteneciente a la Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares (Puertos del Estado), en conjunción con datos procedentes de una instrumentación compuesta por sensores de presión existente en el paramento vertical, proporciona un novedoso medio para analizar la respuesta estructural del cajón, no sólo ante la acción del oleaje, sino también ante los efectos producidos por las maniobras de los buques en el muelle. Como la medición de estas aceleraciones y velocidades angulares se hace a altas frecuencias (de hasta 400 Hz), podemos proporcionar datos válidos acerca del comportamiento estructural y de los movimientos reales del cajón, tratando de correlacionar este comportamiento con los resultados obtenidos por el grupo de trabajo PROVERBS (Probabilistic design of vertical breakwaters, MAST III EU Programme), y generando una base de datos estadística de movimientos que deben considerarse para enriquecer los conocimientos en este ámbito. Además, la posibilidad de registrar los efectos causados por las maniobras de atraquedesatraque-estancia de los buques, abre un nuevo punto de vista al diseño estructural de un dique-muelle, siendo también de gran interés para los diseñadores de obras marítimas y para la correcta definición de las maniobras del buque en el muelle. The recent deployment of new instrumentation designed to provide accelerations and angular velocities from caisson #8 at Botafoc seawall, Ibiza, along with an existing pressure sensor instrumentation at the vertical wall, provides a way to record and process data of the structural response, not only to waves, but also to effects caused by ship mooring operations at Botafoc seawall. As the measurement of these angular speeds and accelerations is programmed with sampling frecuencies up to 400 Hz, and by integrating all data through time we may provide suitable data of the structural behaviour of the caisson. This behaviour is tried to be correlated with the PROVERBS working group achievements (Probabilistic design of vertical breakwaters, MAST III EU Programme), generating a statistical movement database that must be used to improve knowledge on this subject. Also the possibility to record the effects caused by the different ship mooring operations is a new point of view of the complete structural design of a seawall-wharf, which is considered an interesting matter for coastal designers as well for a correct ship mooring processes definition

    Reproductive history before and after HIV diagnosis: A cross-sectional study in HIV-positive women in Spain

    The aim of this study is to examine the reproductive history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive women, before and after HIV diagnosis, to describe the characteristics of women with pregnancies after HIV diagnosis, and to assess the prevalence of mother-to-child transmission. A cross-sectional study was performed among women within reproductive ages (18–49) selected from the cohort in the Spanish AIDS Research Network (CoRIS). A descriptive analysis of the pregnancy outcomes was made according to women’s serostatus at the moment of pregnancy and association of women’s characteristics with having pregnancy after HIV diagnosis was evaluated using logistic regression models. Overall, 161 women were interviewed; of them, 86% had been pregnant at least once and 39% after HIV diagnosis. There were 347 pregnancies, 29% of them occurred after HIV diagnosis and in these, 20% were miscarriages and 29% were voluntary termination of pregnancy. There were 3 cases of mother-to-child transmission among the 56 children born from HIV-positive mothers; in these cases, women were diagnosed during delivery. Having a pregnancy after HIV diagnosis was more likely when the younger women were at the time of diagnosis: odds ratio (OR)=1.29 (95% confidence interval 0.40–4.17) for 25 to 29 years old, OR=0.59 (0.15–2.29) for 30 to 34 years old, OR=0.14 (0.03–0.74) for ≥35 years old, compared with thosediagnosis, who were diagnosed for ≥5 years (OR=5.27 [1.71–16.18]), who received antiretroviral treatment at some point (OR=9.38 [1.09–80.45]), and who received information on reproductive health (OR=4.32 [1.52–12.26]). An important number of pregnancies occurred after HIV diagnosis, reflecting a desire for motherhood in these women.Reproductive and sexual health should be tackled in medical follow-ups

    Brief Report: CYP27B1 rs10877012 T Allele Was Linked to Non-AIDS Progression in ART-Naïve HIV-Infected Patients: A Retrospective Study.

    HIV/AIDS progression is linked to vitamin D, which is regulated by several key cytochromes P450 (CYP). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CYP genes influence vitamin D metabolism and serum levels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between CYP SNPs and the clinical AIDS progression in antiretroviral treatment (ART)-naïve HIV-infected patients. We performed a retrospective study in 661 ART-naïve HIV-infected patients who were stratified by their AIDS progression pattern [181 long-term nonprogressors (LTNPs), 332 moderate progressors, and 148 rapid progressors (RPs)]. Four CYP SNPs (CYP2R1 rs10500804, CYP2R1 rs1993116, CYP27B1 rs10877012, and CYP24A1 rs6013897) were genotyped using Agena Bioscience's MassARRAY platform. Correction for multiple testing was performed using the false discovery rate (Benjamini-Hochberg procedure). The adjusted regression showed a significant association only for CYP27B1 rs10877012 SNP. When analyzing all HIV patients, the rs10877012 T allele was protective against AIDS progression (ordinal outcome) under the dominant [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.69; P = 0.021) and additive (aOR) = 0.75; P = 0.025] inheritance models. When analyzing LTNPs versus RPs, the rs10877012 T allele also showed a significant protective association under the dominant (aOR = 0.45; P = 0.004) and additive (aOR = 0.54; P = 0.008) inheritance models. P values remained significant after correcting by multiple comparisons only for the comparison of LTNPs versus RPs (extreme phenotypes). The CYP27B1 rs10877012 T allele was linked to non-AIDS progression in ART-naïve HIV-infected patients.     Affinity Paths and Information Diffusion in Social Networks

    Widespread interest in the diffusion of information through social networks has produced a large number of Social Dynamics models. A majority of them use theoretical hypothesis to explain their diffusion mechanisms while the few empirically based ones average out their measures over many messages of different content. Our empirical research tracking the step-by-step email propagation of an invariable viral marketing message delves into the content impact and has discovered new and striking features. The topology and dynamics of the propagation cascades display patterns not inherited from the email networks carrying the message. Their disconnected, low transitivity, tree-like cascades present positive correlation between their nodes probability to forward the message and the average number of neighbors they target and show increased participants' involvement as the propagation paths length grows. Such patterns not described before, nor replicated by any of the existing models of information diffusion, can be explained if participants make their pass-along decisions based uniquely on local knowledge of their network neighbors affinity with the message content. We prove the plausibility of such mechanism through a stylized, agent-based model that replicates the \emph{Affinity Paths} observed in real information diffusion cascades.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Low CD4/CD8 ratio is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in late and non-late presenters: results from a multicentre cohort study, 2004–2018

    Background To study whether the association between the CD4/CD8 ratio variation over time and the development of clinical outcomes vary in late presenters (CD4 count 0.4, CD4/CD8 ratio 0.4, regardless of the late presentation status. Conclusions A low CD4/CD8 measured over time is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV independently of their late presentation status. These data support the prognostic role of CD4/CD8 over time and can help defining a subgroup of patients who need closer monitoring to avoid comorbidities

    Diurnal and seasonal active layer and permafrost dynamics from boreholes of the Latin American permafrost network

    Permafrost is present in the high-altitude mountains of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt as well as the Andes, even in the extreme dry Atacama highland. The permafrost and active layer termal state are characterized at Latin American Permafrost Network study sites. Ice rich or extremely dry permafrost was observed during drilling operations from Mexico (Pico de Orizaba, 5636m a.s.l. Iztaccíhuatl, 5230m a.s.l.), Colombia, Ecuador (Chimborazo, 6263m a.s.l.), Peru (Coropuna 5250 m a.s.l., Ampato 5850 m a.s.l., Chachani 5600 m a.s.l.) including the highest human habitation in the world: La Rinconada 5100 m a.s.l., Bolivia (Chacaltaya 5300 m a.s.l. where glacier disappeared in 2005), and the Chilean/Argentinian border (up to 6750 m a.s.l. including Parinacota, Aucanquilcha, Ojos del Salado, Llullaillaco, Tupungato and Tupungatito). The Lower Limit of Alpine Permafrost (LLAP) is redrawn from this study between latitude 19˚N and 40˚S where it is mainly in the tropical and arid Andes. This is not a rock glacier monitoring program that not mapping sporadic permafrost, but continuous permafrost terrains for long term temperature monitoring and understanding for local hydrological problems such as glacier/snow melt runoff or sublimation rate of higher elevations. The maximum active layer is typically influenced by the diurnal fluctuations which is between 12-30 cm deep however, maximum 2m depth of the seasonal active layer was observed at Ojos del Salado near the LLAP (5200 m a.s.l.). Daily severe frost shattering occurs near the ground surface, producing a dusty, fine-material horizon at an active layer near the LLAP, however a few freeze-thaw actions are higher than 6400 m. The snow-covered periods are important for providing protection from strong tropic solar radiation

    Resumen ejecutivo del documento de consenso sobre el manejo de la patología renal en pacientes con infección por VIH

    El objetivo de este documento es actualizar las recomendaciones sobre la evaluación y el manejo de la afectación renal en pacientes con infección por el VIH del año 2010. La función renal debe monitorizarse en todos los pacientes e incluir la medida de la concentración sérica de creatinina, la estimación del filtrado glomerular (ecuación CKD-EPI), la medida del cociente proteína/creatinina en orina y un sedimento urinario. El estudio básico de la función tubular ha de incluir la concentración sérica de fosfato y la tira reactiva de orina (glucosuria). En ausencia de alteraciones, el cribado será anual. En pacientes tratados con tenofovir o con factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de enfermedad renal crónica (ERC), se recomienda una evaluación más frecuente. Se debe evitar el uso de antirretrovirales potencialmente nefrotóxicos en pacientes con ERC o factores de riesgo para evitar su progresión. También se revisan las indicaciones de la biopsia renal, cuándo enviar el paciente al nefrólogo y las indicaciones, evaluación y manejo del paciente en diálisis o del trasplante renal
